We are coming to SF in early August for 5 nights...staying at the Hilton Financial District. We are planning on a day of general sight seeing (cable cars, Coit, Wharf, China Town, etc.); a day trip (ferry?) to Sausolito and a few more SF sights/Union Square shopping (the kids are not interested in Alcatraz); a day driving to Muir Woods and up the coast to Bodega Bay (possibly one winery on the way back?). Unsure what to do on the 4th day - anything suggestions. Was thinking of Metreon and some sort of museum. Would consider Yosemite - but it seems like a hike for a day trip.
Thanks!
Traveling with Young Teens
I have a teenage daughter and a pre-teen son. We%26#39;ve spent many rainy afternoons at the Metreon. It%26#39;s basically just a mall but should probably hold your kids%26#39; interest for an hour or two. The museums nearby include the MoMA (teens may or may not like), the Zeum (my kids have always enjoyed it), the Cartoon Art Museum (a cool little museum if you like comic books), the Museum of the African Diaspora (never been there, always wanted to) and the CA Academy of Sciences (temporarily downtown until the new buildings open).
It%26#39;s too bad they%26#39;re not interested in Alcatraz. It%26#39;s much more interesting than it sounds. If you%26#39;re at the Wharf, I%26#39;d recommend the Musee Mechanique at Pier 45. It%26#39;s a half hour of cheap fun for kids of all ages.
Traveling with Young TeensNomadDad is 芦Unsure what to do禄
Get to the Exploratorium when the doors open, planning nothing earlier than dinner for the day. Getting in is easy. Getting out is extremely difficult.
The ';Don%26#39;t-miss SIGHTS in San Francisco'; page geocities.com/iconoc/Articles/Sights.html has enough to keep you busy for nine 12.7-hour days. It includes links to your best sources of advice on WHERE TO EAT and, according to the Department of Health, WHERE TO NOT EAT here, the UseNet Group ba.food, and the quite-good sfSurvey and the comprehensive Yelp. It also has a WEATHER CHART with a link to current conditions.
The FLAG/MAPS page geocities.com/iconoc/Grafix/FlagMaps.html has links to the best on-line MAP of San Francisco, an inter-active PDF created for the San Francisco Municipal Railway best viewed at 150% or greater magnification. There%26#39;s also a link that will tell you HOW TO GET THERE FROM HERE. Among other maps and links on the page is an outstanding WALKER/BICYCLIST map that shows the steepness of our streets, a map of our CABLE CAR ROUTES, our 49-mile SCENIC DRIVE, and a superb map of GOLDEN GATE PARK.
The frequently-updated SPECIAL EVENTS page has irregularly-scheduled music and dances as well as links to seven calendars of regularly-scheduled dances, a composite of five of them, and one of dance cruises and events around the world: http://geocities.com/dancefest/Specials.html
I appreciate the feedback. I know it sounds strange asking what to do in SF for 4 days...but 13-15 is a very strange (and difficult to travel with) age.
Definitely the Exploratorium. Better than the Metreon. You might not be able to get them to leave.
