San Diego to Del Mar scenic drive?

My wife and will be flying into San Diego and staying in Del Mar. We%26#39;ll be renting a convertible and would like to know of a scenic route to Del Mar from San Diego. Thanks

San Diego to Del Mar scenic drive?

Yes, you can make a 90 minute + drive if you like with a few stops. When you leave the rental car lots, turn away from downtown (left I believe) towards Point Loma.

Stay on North Harbor Drive until you come to Nimitz Blvd, turn right on Nimitz. You%26#39;ll sort of nick the end of Point Loma and just pass to the east of Ocean Beach. Nimitz will turn into Sunset Cliffs. Avoid the desire to get onto I-8 East.

Take the offramp from Sunset Cliffs to Ingraham heading north.You%26#39;ll need to take an immediate offramp again onto West Mission Bay Drive. You%26#39;re now passing Sea World and you%26#39;re in the middle of Mission Bay Park.

You%26#39;ll eventually come to Mission Blvd at the stoplight. Turn right. Directly ahead of you is the wooden roller coaster on the beach -- an old piece of work saved from the wreckers ball more than once. You%26#39;re only a block from the beach and as you head north on Mission Blvd, you are passing through Mission Beach and then soon the ocean end of Pacific Beach.

Watch for the sign to La Jolla or La Jolla Blvd. This will put you on La Jolla Blvd headed to La Jolla through the Windansea neighborhood.

In the La Jolla village, La Jolla Blvd wil become Prospect. This is a great place to have a little lunch and walk around the cove. After lunch, head out of La Jolla on Prospect or Ivanhoe. Turn left onto Torrey Pines.

At the intersection (fork in the road) take it! Turn left onto La Jolla Shores Drive. You%26#39;ll head past the world famous Scripps Oceanographic Institute ann eventually come to a t-intersection at North Torrey Pines Blvd. Don%26#39;t miss the drop dead view as you head up the steep hill. Dead ahead is the campus of Univesity of California at San Diego.

Turn left onto North Torrey Pines Blvd. At the intersection with Genessee you%26#39;ll want to turn left to stay on North Torrey Pines Blvd. You%26#39;re heading through the Torrey Pines area. Our famous public golf course is located to your left -- home of some damn PGA event. Eventually you%26#39;ll get to the long grade down to Del Mar. A beautiful view awaits you. One of my favorite beaches is dead ahead at North Torrey Pines State Beach. Parking is to the east of the highway, you walk under the railroad tracks and highway to get to the beach.

As you continue up the hill you%26#39;re entering the village of Del Mar. Welcome home!
