Hi, im running a trek for 9 friends, and we are going to do the High sierra trail. i need to know how to get from the airport in LA to the start point at the Lodge pole and then get picked up at the Whitney Portal by another means of transport and back to LA. this is in Jun 07 for 12 days. thanx
High sierra trailThe High Sierra Trail starts at Crescent Meadow, not Lodgepole, although you may have to go to Lodgepole to pick up your permit.
In June, especially early June, you might still need crampons and ice axes to negotiate the higher passes. There is supposed to be a bus service starting sometime this year from Visalia into the the park, and then other busses to take you around the park. There are, or were, people who would pick you up on the east side at Whitney Portal and take you down to Lone Pine, but I don%26#39;t think anyone of these is going to take you all the way back to LA. You%26#39;d have to get a Greyhound bus or something. Try www.395.com, it might have some info on rides from Whitney.
High sierra trailTechnically, you could get to the High Sierra trail from Lodgepole, but it%26#39;ll take you at least a couple hours%26#39; more hiking to get there.
Don%26#39;t know if you%26#39;ve checked the website yet:

Regarding your transportation from Whitney Portal back to LA, you may want to leave a message on the ';Mt. Whitney Reports'; forum at the Whitney Portal Store for information. They may be quite helpful. Good luck!
