hotels in san francisco

We are going to San Francisco around the 2nd of April for two or three days and wondered if anyone had any advice on nice hotels in the area. we want to do all the usual tourist things-pier 39, alcatraz and so on but we are hiring a car so not a problem to travel to these places. any advice most appreciated.

This site allows you to sort hotels by different criteria and review them, so that would be your best bet for selecting the hotel. The best advice is: Get rid of the car. San Francisco is a walking city, has good public transit and everything is relatively close. If you stay in the Wharf area you can walk to everything you mention you want to do. Unless you are driving out of the City, you don%26#39;t need a car and it is probably easier to get around without it. It%26#39;s definitely less expensive with out it. If you plan a trip out of the City, rent the car for that day.

If I were staying in Glasgow and wanted to do the tourist things, would you suggest having a car? I think San Francisco would be a similar situation. Los Angeles, of the major American Cities, is the only place you NEED a car to get around in my opinion.

Renting a car for the typical tourist things is just about the worst thing you can do in my opinion. The ';typical'; tourist stuff in the City is all very easily accessible via public transit and it isn%26#39;t nearly as costly. Not only is parking quite expensive, it%26#39;s also a hassle once the car is out of the hotel garage. It simply isn%26#39;t worth the cost. Now, if you plan to do a day trip to say, Napa, rent a car for the day and return it when you%26#39;re finished. Much less expensive, much less hassle.

As far as a hotel goes, how much are you looking to spend per/night?

Nice clean place, good location for walking everywhere, parking included in the rates (other hotels charge $20-$40 for parking).

Thanks for everyone%26#39;s advice. As far as hiring a car goes-we are travelling from LA to SF and then Vegas so we don%26#39;t really have a choice but to have a car but would leave it at whatever hotel we stay at in SF- have heard the Radisson at fisherman%26#39;s wharf is a good hotel-any ideas?

Like the other poster mentioned, The Columbus Motor Inn, among a select few others, has free parking. If you are going to have a car, you can save the parking expense at one of those places. I think the Radisson charges for parking. However, if don%26#39;t mind the extra cost, I think the Radisson, Holiday Inn Express, Tuscan Inn and Argonaut are all good choices.

Since you will have a car, I would suggest driving out to the Cliff House/Ocean Beach, Golden Gate Park, The Marin Headlands, Muir Woods, down the ';Crookedest'; Street and through Sausalito. All are quick, simple, have parking available and are easier with a car of your own.

I prefer Union Square versus Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf since the latter is very touristy and not so original. As to renting a car, I would advise against it since parking is expensive and quite limited. San Francisco is a city where it is easy to move around on foot or public transport.
