I may be asking for too much - but we are 2 females travelling to LA for the first time in April. We have no idea where to stay and there are so many options it is quite overwhelming.I don%26#39;t really understand the different areas that make up LA i.e. HollyWood, West Hollywood, Sunset Strip. We would like to stay somewhere that is located close to all the touristy stuff.
Plans for transportation - public transit or cheap cab rides.
Only firm plan is going to the Price is Right.
Budget - $100 or less and it would be nice if it included a continental breakfast.

Here%26#39;s a map of the L.A. neighborhoods. NOTE: There is an error on this map. Hollywood is postioned incorrectly. It should be where the word UNIVERSAL (in UNIVERSAL STUDIOS) is:

You can go to MTA.NET to plan your metro RAIL and metro BUS trips (enter your starting and ending points in the upper right corner of their webistie).
Regarding taxi rides, there is no such thing as a cheap taxi ride. A one mile (1.6 km) trip will cost $6; a 2 mile (3.2 km) trip will cost $9.
Meanwhile, you can buy a $3 DAY PASS that will give you unlimited rides on the metroBUSES and metroRAIL trains for the day. Buy the pass from any bus driver (exact change required) for from the vending machines in the metroRAIL stations. (exact change is not required).
Also look at out FAQs listed at the top of the TOPIC LIST. Here you%26#39;ll find info on the different neighborhoods plus a wealth of other knowledge.
As far as a hotel under $100, you can find one that is safe and clean and well-located but keep in mind that, at that price, the hotel will not be fancy -- think more along the lines of a ';college dorm'; kind of feel.
One of the more popular ';tourist class'; hotels in Hollywood is the Orchid Suites. Info at orchidsuites.com
Good luck!

If you don%26#39;t mind sharing a king bed, you should be able to book something with hotelCelebrity.com for around $100.
Hollywood is a good place to stay on a budget because you can get cheap transport from LAX airport (Flyaway Bus to Union Station followed by Red Line subway to Hollywood).....and there is quick bus service down to Price is Right. I wouldn%26#39;t say that you%26#39;re ';close'; to everything touristy because L.A. is so spread out, nothing is ';close to everything';.
Check the fares into Burbank airport, sometimes they are $30 cheaper than LAX and from Burbank , without heavy luggage, you can hop one city bus and be in Hollywood in 25 minutes. From LAX to Hollywood, cheapest way will take you 90 minutes.
