Hello all,
Been reading the posts but still have a couple of questions. 3 other girlfriends and I are going out on a Girls long w/e trip and doing all the usual SF area tourist things + Napa wine tour. Will be there from May 4-May 8, 07.
#1 Hotel: We are doing the flight + hotel thing, but can%26#39;t decide between Chancellor and Handlery b/c both seem comparable. Are they pretty much in the same area, Union Square? We are looking at getting a room with 2 double beds, doesn%26#39;t look like Chancellor has them, they appear to have only twin beds. Are they both in safe areas? We were initially looking at Ramada downtown but got discouraged by the safety comments. I was almost set on Chancellor, but got swayed by the Handlery recc%26#39;s. What%26#39;s the best bet for us girls. Oh, we are looking at booking 2 rooms.
#2 Things to do: Since we have such a limited time, is the Union Square the best home base to do Alcatraz, China Town, Japan Town, Little Italy, activities, or are we better off in the Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf area?
#3 Napa: Are there any outfits that take people on a tour from SF to Napa? We are trying to decide if we should do that vs. driving. We are not planning on getting drunk on the tour, but if we don%26#39;t have to worry about driving, would rather do that.
#4 Restaurant: We would like to have one ';splurge'; meal, either in SF, or the Napa area. Any recommendations? If we get in on Friday afternoon, would it be wise to head up to Napa right away, do the tour and then have dinner there? or should we save it toward the end of the stay, say on Monday where we can spend the whole day?
#5 Weather: What %26#39;s it like in May?
Thanks so much for any thoughts. Can%26#39;t wait!

Chancellor v. Handlery
Given how many people are in your party, unless you want to pay for two rooms, my opinion is that you should stay at the Handlery. The rooms are larger. If you don%26#39;t mind paying for the two rooms, then yes, you will have 2 twin beds at the Chancellor.
In my opinion, Union Square is your best ';home base';.
Chancellor v. Handlery
re your last question: If you arrive in SF on a Friday afternoon, I think it best to remain in the city and do Napa on Monday. The weather in Napa in the month of May should be sunny and warm (70%26#39;s, 80%26#39;s), however, prepare for cooler days in SF (low 60%26#39;s but breezy). Dress in layers.
The Chancellor and the Handlery are about 2 blocks from each other, walking distance. No problems with the area. Just decide on which gives you the kind of space you want. Since you are on a fly + hotel do you have a choice of rooms in either hotel, or are they just ';picked'; for you? Are you allowed to contact the hotel(s) to request certain types of rooms?
We do have a choice to some extent. You can choose to upgrade for extra $, as little as $4/night to as much as $100+ a night.
