Travel time from LA to San Diego

Hey there, gonna be in LA for five days in May and was thinking of travelling down to San Diego to visit the zoo. Just wondering how long it takes to get there by car and what would be the best time to travel as i%26#39;m sure the traffic gets very busy at certain times. All advise greatly appreciated.

Travel time from LA to San Diego

At least 2hrs without traffic.

Travel time from LA to San Diego

The last poster%26#39;s 2-hour estimate is pretty much correct for a drive. It can be done in a bit less, but in traffic it can be a 3-4 hour slog. You might also consider taking the train from downtown Los Angeles. It takes around 3 hours and is a very pleasant and comfortable ride. The train takes you to down-town San Diego, and it is very easy to get a cab from there to the famous zoo.

9-10am is going to be a good start time from LA, on either a weekday or weekend. You might make it in as few as 2 hours, but you%26#39;re likely to hit some traffic here-and/or-there (you didn%26#39;t say where in ';LA'; you are), so figure on 2.5 hours.

Stay as late as you can. Enjoy a leisurely dinner after the zoo. The later you wait, the easier the traffic will be heading back to LA.

If you%26#39;d rather not spend 4 to 6 hours driving, consider the L.A. Zoo. -- not as big or famous as San Diego%26#39;s but still quite large -- 1200 animals and 1.4 million visitors per year.

The zoo features free parking, cheap admission prices ($10 for adults/ $5 for kids), and is within 30 to 40 minutes of most parts of Los Angeles.

Don%26#39;t miss the WORLD OF BIRDS SHOW (held several times per day and included in the admission price), the Reptile House (unless you%26#39;re scared of the dark) and the Chimps!
