Are they going to be hiring a car?
If not, look at southwest airlines (southwest.com) to travel between cities. (Southwest is the %26#39;easyjet%26#39; of the U.S.)
Check with UCLA directly: ucla.edu
The cheapest rooms in general are in hostels. One of the popular ones in Hollywood is the Orange Drive Manor Hostel. They have dormitory-style housing as well as private rooms. Info is here:

To get around the city, they%26#39;ll need to use the metro rail and metro buses (assuming they won%26#39;t have a car). Info at MTA.NET
Check our our FAQs at the top of this forum for lots of info.

Craigslist.org has listings for sublets and room rentals, usually not until the room has become vacant, however, maybe a month before you want it you can find something.
dailybruin.com is the paper for UCLA students, they often try to rent out their apartments for June and July when school is out.
Thanks for the info will check out all recommendations no car!
