Hi all -
I will be traveling on business and staying at the Majestic hotel in Pacific Heights.
How safe is the neighborhood?
I%26#39;d like to catch an A%26#39;s game while I am there - is BART close by? Safe to walk after returning from a 7pm game?
Can anyone recommend reasonable restaurants/diners in that area?
Thanks in advance!
Pacific Heights? The Majestic Hotel is at 1500 Sutter Street, near Gough, across Van Ness Avenue It is marginally in ';Pacific Heights'; BART does not run in that area, but San Francisco has excellent public transportation. I will leave it up to a resident of the city to comment on the safety of the area and to give you advice on how to use the excellent public transportation system to get to a BART station.
Pacific Heights?I am not a resident of SanFrancisco BUT I have stayed at the Majestic.
The neighborhood is residential and just fine, although I%26#39;d call it Japantown rather than PacificHeights. I have actually walked from there to UnionSquare but If you dont want to,then you can take the bus.
I like to walk in nearby Japantown(the mall) and read menus and choose from the myriad of Japanese places. I f you walk over to Fillmore there are lots of restaurants there as well. I dont remember the name(maybe the French Bakery) but if you walk north onFillmore there%26#39;s a great french bistro for bkfst or lunch.
If you need to take BART to Oakland, go to www.bart.gov and enter a starting point of Montgomery Station to Oakland Coliseum (reverse the trip as well). The fastest and less complicated route to BART is taking a bus #2 Clement or 3 Jackson (if before 7pm) to Montgomery station (Post/Market/Montgomery). Pick up the bus at the corner of Gough %26amp; Post. $1.50 is the fare. The other option is the 38 Geary on O%26#39;Farrell aka Starr King just below Gough--there%26#39;s a bus stop shelter between Gough and Franklin. It%26#39;s a little confusing because Geary becomes O%26#39;Farrell right at Gough/Franklin even though the map says Starr King.
Exiting Montgomery BART after the game, the bus back is #3 Jackson you can pick up on Sansome %26amp; Sutter (there%26#39;s an exit that could be closed to Sansome in late hours, I%26#39;m not sure). This bus is better than the 38 Geary, but you can take the 38 to Gough %26amp; Geary and walk to Sutter from there quite easily on the way home.
I live one block from the Majestic. It%26#39;s safe, but anyone looking like a tourist is asking for trouble in many big cities.
My favorite restaurants:
The Grubstake is open until 4am, but not open before 5pm Monday-Friday. Open on weekend days. It%26#39;s on Pine @ Polk. It%26#39;s an old train car diner and it serves American and Portugese food.
Japantown has a great sushi and Japanese restaurant in the mall adjacent to the Miyako Hotel called Takara.
Fillmore street has great restaurants. You can sit outside at many. If you%26#39;re into low-budget eats, try The Grove on Fillmore @ Pine. They%26#39;re open 7am-11pm or later.
Closer to the Majestic is a restaurant in the Hotel Carlton on Sutter @ Larkin called Saha that serves Arabic cuisine www.sahasf.com
Whole Foods is on California %26amp; Franklin Street and they have lots of prepared foods, hot and cold food self-serve, sandwiches, soups, bakery, cold drinks, etc.
There%26#39;s a BevMo on Sutter %26amp; Van Ness, but there%26#39;s a corner store even closer to you on Franklin %26amp; Sutter.
