Nice coastal overnight stop between LA & San Diego ?

UK family visting, 2 adults , 2 teens touring from San Fran to LA to San Diego on Highway 1 before going to Grand Canyon , Vegas , Yosemite etc. We have booked most accommodation but are unsure of a picturesque , fun ,coastal location between LA and San Diego which is averagely priced and is of some interest.

Grateful for any ideas!

Thanks

Karen

Nice coastal overnight stop between LA %26amp; San Diego ?

check out laguna beach. it is the art center of southern california. it will be above average price wise, but i think you will enjoy your visit.

I agree that Laguna Beach is a nice location . I think though, that unless you are planning to go to Disneyland in Anaheim, SanDiego and LA are so close together that you should just skip staying overnight in Orange County and proceed directly to SanDiego where you could also stay in a fun seaside location. The city of SanDiego is located in the county of SanDiego(confusing) which has fun coastal locations as well.

Laguna Beach, a beautiful area of the coast. We stayed at the Montage Resort but there are many places to choose from. Very picturesque and scenic. :)

Keep in mind that SD is only about 2.5-3.5 hours from LA (depending on traffic) so you might not need to stay overnight between the two cities

Hmmm interesting !

Thanks for your posts and advice guys. I had realised the distance is not that great but have a spare day in the itinerary to kill and thought it would be good to spend it relaxing coastside before heading inland.

The other option was to head inland to Palm Springs or even Joshua National Park although the kids might not dig these areas as much ?!

hmm I thought you said you were heading to SanDiego? I fyou jhve an extra day then by all means spend it on the coast or just get to SD 1 day early. Heading inland to Palm Springs and THEN back to SD doesn%26#39;t really make sense especially if you are going to go to Las Vegas,Grand Canyon etc afterwards.

Depending on what time of year you are coming Joshua Tree or Palm Springs may not be very comfortable temperature wise for you, especially being from the UK.

I am coming over 03/07/07so realise it will be hot, hot, hot ! Don%26#39;t worry I%26#39; ll pack the Factor 50 and a sun shield.

We Brits like to torture ourselves : )

Thanks Riffsmom, very sensible !

I was originally told not to bother staying at SD but ,as time now allows ; ).Can you suggest anywhere specific to relax a while , swim , and stay overnight at a reasonable rate ?

In that case I definitely suggest the coast over the inland. 120F is not likely to be very relaxing.

I%26#39;m going to go against the tide here and suggest Carlsbad over Laguna. Less touristy, more relaxing, and cheaper.
