How long does it take? Is it doable on 1 day? 2 days? Where you you recommend staying overnight to break it up?
Many thanks
Steve
How long does Highway 1 take from SFO to LAX?
It%26#39;s doable in one day, though you won%26#39;t finish it in daylight.
How long it takes depends on the time of day, time of year and where, exactly, you%26#39;re leaving from in San Francisco and where you%26#39;re driving to in Los Angles...oh, and how aggressive you are as a driver.
A good overnight spot is the Cambria/San Luis Obispo/Pismo Beach area.
How long does Highway 1 take from SFO to LAX?It%26#39;s a really long drive. We%26#39;ve just returned from a trip where we drove down Highway 1. I wouldn%26#39;t recommend doing this in one day. There were several sections where road works were being carried out. Also it can get foggy in parts - we hit fog a few miles outside of San Simeon and could barely see the side of the road!
We took our time and stopped in Monterey, which is quite close to SF, for a couple of days (lovely place, would recommend a visit.) Then we stopped at San Simeon to see Hearst Castle. This would be a reasonable stopping point if you take two days. We stayed at The Best Western Cavalier in an oceanfront room, complete with fireplace. Not cheap (for a BW type of place) but lovely to sleep to the sound of the waves.
There are long stretches where there is only a single lane going each way, with occasional additional passing lanes, so if you get stuck behind a couple of RVs that will really slow you down. As we got to the North of LA the traffic got really heavy too. We were there at the beginning of Dec, which wasn%26#39;t really the tourist season so it was relatively quiet on Highway 1 - I%26#39;ve no idea how busy it gets when the weather is nicer.
What I%26#39;m trying to say is...you could have an easy drive, with no delays/hold ups and drive there in a day but it%26#39;s not fast like the M1 or even the A1. Parts of it need slow driving. Parts of it just demand you stop and look at the scenery. I%26#39;d take at least two days just for driving. (Then I%26#39;d add a couple of days; go to the Aquarium in Monterey, take a whale watching trip too, take the 17 mile drive round Pebble beach, see Hearst Castle, visit Santa Cruz and Santa Barbara., etc, etc I would regret not having time to do this sort of stuff.)
Have a good trip!
