I%26#39;ve been to SD, but I know very little about the surrounding towns and beaches. Does anyone have a tucked-away gem that they%26#39;d recommend? Something comfortable, clean, with a B%26amp;B or ';romantic resort'; feel that isn%26#39;t a gazillion bucks a night?
I%26#39;d like to book a quiet place outside of the city where my parents and I can just relax and have a view, at least not one looking onto a parking lot or crowded beach. Hopefully within an hour drive of downtown SD, and under $250/night/room.
I%26#39;ve checked out all the usual suspects: Inn @ La Jolla, The Catamaran, Humphrey%26#39;s, and dozens of others, but the ones that aren%26#39;t booked are out of our price range. Otherwise I%26#39;m finding a lot of places that seem to be overrun with big families and small children (No offense! We%26#39;d just like quiet).
We just happened to pick Valentine%26#39;s Day weekend, which is why everything is so booked. I%26#39;m going crazy staring at my computer screen and flipping endlessly through my Fodor%26#39;s. ANY help appreciated, anything at all! A bone, a nugget... something. :)
Thanks in advance!
I'm going nuts! Quiet place on the brim of San Diego?
One idea is the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe. They have availability. It is a ver wealthy area just inland form DelMar which is th efirst suburb north of the city ofSD.

Then there%26#39;s the Rancho Bernardo Inn. For some reason my computer couldn%26#39;t get into their reservation system.

Rancho Bernardo is another suburb further inland off of the I-15 freeway.
Then there is also the Pala Casino Resort which is a 4****AAA rated resort. We have stayed there. They have a lovely pool area with cabanas and 2 temp jacuzzi,a spa with massage etc. an dseveral restaurants. I fyou gamble they have a great non-smoking gambling area as well.
Let me know if any of these work out and maybe I can think of other ideas.

Riffsmom gave you a couple great ideas. There are a few bed %26amp; breakfast inns in North San Diego County in the areas of Cardiff and Encinitas. I%26#39;ve heard good things about the Cardiff by the Sea Lodge - and love the location in Cardiff, which is actually part of Encinitas.

Another suggestion - but this one is right in San Diego. Located in the wonderful older, residential of Banker%26#39;s Hill on a very quiet street is the Banker%26#39;s Hill Manor. I love walking around the neighborhood, and find it wonderfully quiet, with great views.

If none of Riffsmom, or these appeal to you, you might want to look at L%26#39;Auberge right in Del Mar. It has a french country feel to it, and Del Mar is lovely area to stay.
L%26#39;Auberge is very nice, my parents stayed there some years ago and liked it. However, as I advise anyone who is considering Del Mar, is that Del Mar has a grade railroad crossing. Personally I like the train sounds and I am not sure if you can hear them from L%26#39;Auberge, although it is not far from the tracks. But my basic point is that Del Mar might not be the most quiet place in the San Diego area.
Cardiff and Encinitas may be quite a bit too far north, but if you can hit the Charthouse restaurant in Cardiff - one of my favorite meals of all time- big windows on the beachsand- get there at opening and enjoy the sunset. Wow its been too long...
You don%26#39;t have to worry about looking out at ';a crowded beach'; the 2nd week of February. This is not Florida! And I can%26#39;t imagine it being too ';Full of kids'; anywhere, either. In fact, you%26#39;ll probably have rain or at least quite chilly weather.
Del Mar is said to be situated so that it gets less rain than anywhere else.
I%26#39;ll second the recommendation for the Rancho Bernardo Inn. It%26#39;s in a quiet, suburban neighborhood and has a country club, resort-like feel. There%26#39;s an excellent restaurant on the property (El Bizcocho), and the property is virtually surrounded by a golf course so you%26#39;ll likely have that as a view. As long as you don%26#39;t go during rush hour, driving to downtown SD should take approx. 40 minutes.
If you don%26#39;t mind a trip of about an hour, I would suggest the mountain area of Julian - It%26#39;s a quaint little town with a few B%26amp;B%26#39;s that shouldn%26#39;t cost a fortune.
If you are a fan of the Balboa Park area, you might like the Balboa Park Inn.

I booked a junior suite there last year when my mother-in-law %26amp; her boyfriend came to visit us last year. They loved the place and commented on how quiet it was. Very homey and comfortable.
