This may sound like a stupid question but are there spots such as a quiet road or so that we can just stop car and picnic under a tree or something? Is that allowed since most land in wine country is private?
I know some wineries have picnic tables and areas to sit and eat but I%26#39;m looking for something less busy. Nothing fancy really...just a spot we can throw a blanket down and have a good lunch.
Thanks!
Picnic along road?We%26#39;ve been able to have a peaceful picnic just east of the Silverado Trail. There is a lake if you go on 128 east a few miles from the town of Rutherford. I%26#39;s the Lake Hennessey Recreation Area, so it%26#39;s open for public use.

Our 2 favorite spots are Oakville Crossroad and Yountmill road.
Both are great spots for side of the road picnics, but we usually just have the picnic in the car. If you want to ';spread out';, we%26#39;d suggest you go to a winery (many are not that busy, esp midweek), and buy a bottle of their wine in exchange for a nice spot to picnic.
Talk to your innkeeper-- there are a few wineries that offer special private catered picnic lunches in the middle of vineyards. Very romantic (but only during warmer weather!).

Thanks for the replies. I%26#39;m writing these places down so I%26#39;ll have them handy when we%26#39;re in Napa.
Another quick question - from my researach the Silverado Trail runs north/south along highway 29 and you can take either... my question is which road will give us more of a scenic drive?
We don%26#39;t plan on visiting a ton of vineyards. Just 2, maybe 3, or so...but no more than 3. We haven%26#39;t narrowed it down to which yet. So we%26#39;ll have plenty of time for driving and I love photography so I hope to spend most of that time taking photos.

The Silverado Trail is very beautiful. So is the drive through the Carneros (12/121, from 29 towards Sonoma).
Photographically, the %26#39;Trail is wonderful. There is a knoll by Mumm where lots of scenic painters set up their easels.
About 3/4 mile up the Oakville Grade (looking back down on the valley) is also beautiful.
Lots of beautiful wineries. Artessa is one of our faves. Chateau Montelena is another. Far Niente is unique-- and you can now arrange for a tour.
Hope this helps. :)
