After reading recent negative posts about Tijuana I have been wondering what other options there are for visiting other places in Mexico for the day? Are there any places that you can get to easily (eg with the trolley) as we will not have a car. Also, as we are with young children, I dont think one of those 10 or 11 hour day trips are ideal. All suggestions appreciated!
Places to visit in Mexico - other than Tijuana
The trolley stops at the border on the USA side. You can walk across the border yourself and then there are taxis BUT I don%26#39;t think it is worth it to take little children. I fyou don%26#39;t want to go on the tour ,(which I agree would be long an boring to a you ng child) my suggestion is that on another holiday you plan a trip intoMexico. They have some lovely all inclusive resorts on the Carribbean side. I think you will find plenty to do inSanDiego during your stay.
Places to visit in Mexico - other than Tijuana
The only other very close town to SD is Tecate. However you need a car to get there. Its about 20 miles east of Tijuana.
It is much quieter than Tijuana and has a nice central plaza surrounded by restaurants and shops. There%26#39;s also a Tecate brewery there where you can have a beer in their beer garden.
I agree Tecate is lovely with a small public square and tours of the brewery but without a car I think it is impossible.
And I, of course, recommend Rosarito Beach--or Ensenada. You can get to Rosarito easily by Mexibus. I think you would enjoy being here much more with a car (because then I could direct you to some wonderful places for lunch and to a beautiful drive along the coast and gorgeous beach), but it is possible without a car. If you choose a tour, you save the hassel of driving, which really isn%26#39;t a problem, but you%26#39;ll probably stop at Calafia for lunch, and you won%26#39;t see the best of the coast--though the coast you do see is pretty impressive. :-) If you want to avoid the hassel of crossing the border while driving, you could rent a car on the Mexican side of the border for the day. Avis charges a base rate of $29.00 for the day (and that includes the required 3rd party liability insurance; you can let your credit card cover the vehicle), which then makes the base price the total price--except for gasoline.
Pstreet what a good idea!! I didn%26#39;t know about renting in Mexico or the local bus.
By the way we missed you last year at the Forum Meeting. I hope everything is OK.
We%26#39;re fine--last year I was somewhere else at meeting time, can%26#39;t remember where. We%26#39;re in Mexico now enjoying the cold. :-) I think we%26#39;ll be here until March, then back to Phoenix to do some planning because we have a long trip to Europe in the works for this spring. After Europe, we%26#39;ll be back. Let me know when the next meeting is; I%26#39;d love to meet you.
chissis has a post up about a forum meeting inFeb when a family from the UK will be returning.
I hope you don%26#39;t miss Tijuana. Your children will love it! You can take the greyhound bus from Oceanside, San Diego, or San Ysidro. San Ysidro is right on the border, and it will take you less than 15 minutes to be in downtown Tijuana.
The federales have taken over law enforcement and the place is safer than San Diego.
Coming back takes longer, depending on the day and time. Avoid weekends, early mornings and evenings.
