does anybody know what celebrations will be taking place for independance day? it will be my first time in USA for this holiday, so not sure what to expect, does everything shut down or carry on as usuall?

daisy67 - The 4th is a legal holiday. Most people get the day off, but all the stores, restaurants, etc are open and do good business. One tradition is for families/friends to gather and go out or to barbeque at home. Here and in most cities there are fireworks at night. Because of our normal foggy weather at that time, the fireworks in the City are sometimes just colored blurs in the sky. Some years it is clear and you can see them. Public celebrations for fireworks viewing take place near the Embarcadero.
july 4th
Here is the lineup from Pier 39%26#39;s website. You can see the fireworks (weather permitting from many points in the area. There are other celebrations around the Bay Area as well. More details will emerge as the date draws closer.

1:00 PM to 9:30 PM
PIER 39 celebrates Independence Day with an afternoon line-up of popular local bands. Big Bang Beat takes the stage from 1:00 - 4:00 PM followed by Tainted Love from 6:00 - 9:30 PM. Immediately following the onstage entertainment, a spectacular fireworks display will take place over the San Francisco Bay.
