advice on safety in gaslamp quarter/balboa park

Am spending several days in SD for conference, and plan to spend some free time walking around the Gaslamp Quarter, waterfront, and perhaps taking public transportation to Balboa Park, to take photographs. Beyond basic precautions, should I be at all concerned? I am unfamliar with San Diego and do not usually travel solo.

You will not be alone on your walks. There will be many other folks also walking around the waterfront,the gaslamp, and Balboa Park.

Always be aware of your surroundings as you would be in Chicago and don%26#39;t be wandering around at 2AM(or late when you see few people out)Enjoy our city!!
