Arriving on Amtrak on a early Friday morning. Where to stay?

We will be arriving at Union Station on Amtrak on a Friday morning. We have Amrtak motorcoach getting us from the Union Station to the port the next morning for our cruise.

Our probem is that we can not figure out where to stay for one night. We thought it would be best to stay near Union Station since we need to catch the motorcoach early Saturday morning.

We dont want to rent a car. Can someone please recommeded a nice hotel near Union Station that has suttle service to and from Union Station and that will let us check in early. We will have all our luggage and do not want to be dragging it around until the normal 3 p,m check in time. We have a group of six.. One room would be best but we can do two if needed.

What is your budget?

safety is more important then anything. If we can get a room for all six of us together then I would say $350 including tax. We have checked the omni but not sure if they can or will shuttle us. plus we would have 2 rooms at over $180 for each room. Does the area around Union Station have safe lodging?

The area around the station is pretty ugly and there%26#39;s not much to see or do except visit Chinatown.

However, a taxi ride to most downtown hotels including tip would be less than $10. You could also take the red line metro rail train (below the main level at the station) to the 7th Street.metro center stop where many hotels are located (the Sheraton is literally above the 7th Street/Metro Center stop). Fare for each of you would be $1.25 ( or $7.50, for the 6 of you) so, as you can see the taxi would cost about the same and be a lot more comfortable.

Here%26#39;s a link to downtown hotels including reviews (click on READ ALL REVIEWS under each hotel for more info).

Good luck!

Consider the Best Western Dragon Gate Inn in Chinatown. It is just a couple of blocks away. It has gotten mixed reviews. I%26#39;ve had some friends stay here and they thought it was fine. Might meet your needs.

I beg to differ with HSJ. The area around Union Station is getting quite nice. It is not Beverly Hills. Still, ugly seems a tad harsh. There is Chinatown proper. If you like Chinese food, you%26#39;ll be rewarded. There is a small gallery scene on one of the streets. (Can%26#39;t remember the name.) Olvera Street is open into the early evening and enjoyable. Phillip%26#39;s is an L.A. institution and a great place for a casual meal. Union Station is gorgeous, if you are interested in architecture. If you%26#39;re interested in the outdoors, there is a new park adjacent to Chinatown. There is a nice hike to a marigold patch. (I%26#39;m not kidding.) Bring your camera. The Red Line and Gold Line give you quick access to downtown, Hollywood and Pasadena.

HTH

I think your concerns about safety are overblown. Crime continues to decline to historic lows. Recently, data for downtown showed crime at levels not seen since 1944! Use common sense and you%26#39;ll be fine.

another option would be for us to cancel the motorcoach on saturday morning and then just line up transportation to the port on Friday morning when we get in. But I have been told that near the port is not a safe place to stay either. We leave from the world cruise center on a Princess cruise on that Saturday. At first we were suppose to arrive the on Amtak the same day as the cruise departs. But decided it would be better to arrive a day early just in case amtrak had problems... Problem is that we have NO idea where to stay for that one night. We are open to ANY suggestions. Just want to stay in a safe place for one night. We dont have anything planned for the rest of the day after we arrive so any suggestions on that would also be appreciated.

Thank You

I have looked over some hotels and we are leaning towards the Omni.

What time on Sat morning does your Amtrak motorcoach leave for San Pedro?

We leave Union Station at 9:40 a.m and arrive in San Pedro(catalina terminal) at 11:05 a.m

You can stay in Long Beach or San Pedro, and both are safe places to stay. Although you are leaving from San Pedro, Long Beach is very close by. There are hotels in both San Pedro and Long Beach that have shuttles to the cruise terminal.

Check cruisecritic.com for more info.

Apparently both the Crowne Plaza and Double Tree in San Pedro have shuttles to the port. Guesthouse Inn in Long Beach has 2 bedroom suites and shuttle to the port.

The Omni is a fine hotel. There is much to walk to in the area and you%26#39;ll get a chance to see LOS ANGELES!!!

San Pedro is a little bit sleepy. Long Beach is better -- some cool things to do including the Aquarium of the Pacific (at 1/2 price on Friday nights and not busy).

It%26#39;s up to you what you want to do. We%26#39;d love to have you in Los Angeles for a day!
