What is the best area for a first time visitor to stay in SF? I am looking for a hotel that is moderately priced.
Thanks in advance,

HotelsI like to stay at the Coventry Inn on Lombard St. The rooms are nice, clean, parking is free and the rates are quite reasonable. The drawback is it%26#39;s not in the thick of where most people want to be when they visit San Francisco. Although it%26#39;s not really that far from anything in the city.... and, believe me, I%26#39;ve walked from Lombard to Union Square, Chinatown, the Financial District and Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf.... it can feel a million miles away from everything if you%26#39;re not into the walking thing.
Hotels';Moderately priced'; does not necessarily equal ';best area'; in SF. Columbus Motor Inn would be closest to FW for moderate price and clean. Also Coventry Motor Inn, Lombard Motor Inn, Nob Hill Motor Inn clean and moderate price. You could also consider using Priceline or Hotwire for better prices than rack rate at more ideal locations.
Definitely Union Square is the area to stay in. It is the heart of the City and convenient to everything. Check out www.unionsquaresf.net
Thanks guys!!!
Wes is right....you don%26#39;t want to be way out on Lombard Street, although SF public transportation is excellent. If it were I, Iwould be in the Union Square area, where you have access to Muni and cable cars and shopping, and etc. A short cable car ride to Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf, if you insist, and near the Embarcadero with its markets and restaurants..
Go to hotelres.com.......only gives discounts on SF and Silicon Valley Hotels. Look in the Union Square area. The Chancellor, the Inn at Union Square, the Crowne Plaza, the King George,, Hotel Union Square are the ones I know in moderate price range. In these categories i prefer the Chancellor in this category. But see if you can get a good rate at the Donatello.
The Villa Florence and Sir Francis Drake are others to look at in the Union Square area.
Sir Francis Drake gets TERRIBLE reviews.
I happen to love the Lombard Street area; you%26#39;re very close to the Golden Gate Bridge, tha Palace of Fine Arts, the Marina, the shops and restaurants on Union and Chestnut Streets...and just a easy bus ride away from Fisherman%26#39;s Wharf..the MUNI #30 bus on Chestnut (one block from Lombard) will take you right through North Beach, Chinatown and to Union Square.
I agree is has terrible reviews, but if fits the price range and the location which is the *only* reason I even mentioned it.
Well it is a shame because it is in such a good location and has history, the Starlight Room and restaurant and the dressed up doorman guy who has worked there for 20 plus years. I checked the reviews because it caught my attention when we walked by. They sure need to clean it up.
