San Francisco --> Tahoe

I´ll stay at SF for a week. I was wondering if it is worthwhile to travel Tahoe to ski...? Or is there any other ski centers closer to SF?

San Francisco --%26gt; Tahoe

Yes, it is worthwhile to ski at Tahoe! North Lake or South Lake - your choice! If you leave at 6am, you could make it a day trip. But then you would want to stay another day, once you got to South Lake!

Plan on a 3 to 4 hour drive if there is no snow in the forecast.

I do not know of any ski resort closer that the Lake Tahoe area.

San Francisco --%26gt; Tahoe

If you want to take a couple of days from San Francisco you probably would want to ski at North Lake Tahoe. Interstate 880 is less apt to be closed than Hwy 50 which goes to South Tahoej, although closures aren%26#39;t all that frequent.

There are three places tthat I know of to ski before you get to Truckee, the turnoff for the Lake....Cisco Grove, Kingvale and Donner. I don%26#39;t ski, so I cannot comment on where the best skiing is.

Yes, you should definitely take the time to visit the Lake Tahoe area for some skiing. I, personally, wouldn%26#39;t try to do it all in one day though. I suggest that you drive up to either North or South Shore Lake Tahoe and stay at least one night up there. The drive will take you about 4 hours on a weekday and a bit longer on a friday afternoon or on a saturday as there is apt to be traffic if the snow happens to be really good that weekend.

For the best skiing in the Tahoe area, in my own opinion, i always choose Kirkwood Mountain Resort which is off of Hwy 50 and is about 35 minutes from South Lake Tahoe. The resort itself offers condos to stay in that include lift tickets to the resort in the price of the condo if you prefer not to stay in South Shore Lake Tahoe (although you will find cheaper accomodations in South Shore). You can check out Kirkwood at: http://www.kirkwood.com/winter0607/.

If, however, you%26#39;d prefer to go to the North Shore of Lake Tahoe (via Hwy 80), i would suggest Northstar Resort for some good skiing. Chek it out at: http://www.northstarattahoe.com/

I wouldn%26#39;t recommend the resorts near Truckee, like The Donner Ski Resort, if you are an exerienced skiier/boarder as they are quite small with a very limited amount of lifts and few runs but they would be ideal for beginners. If you are an experienced skiier/boarder, head further up the mountain to get resorts with more runs and better snow.

Hope that helps. Enjoy!

Just off 80 west of Truckee you can ski at Boreal or SugarBowl. Both are better than Soda Springs or Donner. In Truckee off exit 188B you can go to Northstar which is really quite good. If you want something really big you can go to Squaw Valley by taking 89 south just in Truckee. If you try Northstar and it%26#39;s not a weekend you might want to consider staying at the newish Hampton Inn right near the Truckee airport. Close to Northstar but much cheaper than the resort area. On weekends I believe they want 2 nights.

If you%26#39;d rather go to South Lake Tahoe you would take 80 all the way to Sacramento and then take 50 east. You would probably ski Heavenly just because that%26#39;s what%26#39;s most convenient. Kirkwood is about 35 minutes from South Lake Tahoe if the roads are clear, longer if you have to put on chains or the road is snowy. Just before you arrive in SLT there is Sierra at Tahoe which is great. You could get an early start from SF and make it to Sierra and ski the day there, drive to SLT and the next day ski Heavenly and then drive back to SF if that%26#39;s all the time you have. That way you%26#39;d get 2 days of skiing in with a 1 night stay.

I%26#39;m sorry. I see Glinda provided a bunch of the same advice. I didn%26#39;t mean to repeat.

Kulsi,

If it is just skiing that you are interested in here%26#39;s another suggestion for you. Do not rent a car and just get on the ski bus that goes up regularly to the ski resorts for day trips. They pick up from several spots in the Bay Area including San Francisco.

Thank you all for your input!

I decided to have two days for skiing in north Tahoe.
