Hello,
I like knitting socks and I would like to buy some knitting yarn (wool). Does anyone know any good shops where I can buy some? Or do they sell yarn in department stores like Macy%26#39;s etc?
Thank you!
Where to buy knitting yarn?
I%26#39;m pretty sure Macy%26#39;s does not carry yarns. But there is a cute store on Greenwich St called Greenwich Yarn between Webster and Buchanan...

I pass by this place all the time but have never shopped there, so I can%26#39;t recommend it from personal knowledge. But it%26#39;s fairly convenient. The Muni Metro J-Church train from downtown stops a block away.

I get my yarn at Beverly%26#39;s fabric %26amp; crafts store. The nearest is in Westlake Shopping Mall, Daly City. BART goes to Daly City and then you%26#39;d have to take a short local bus ride (SamTrans line 110 or 121). If you wanted to start from the Stonestown Shopping Mall in S.F., the 122 goes from there to Westlake.
If you%26#39;ll have a car or a ride, Westlake and Stonestown have lots of parking.
P.S. I can%26#39;t believe Finland doesn%26#39;t have one of the best selections of knitting yarn anywhere!

I%26#39;m certain it does, but if it%26#39;s anything like Norwegian wool sweaters, it won%26#39;t be anywhere near as cheap as the equivalent in California, even if it is Scandinavian in origin.
Such items will be better found in specialized stores like Beverley%26#39;s than in department stores like Macy%26#39;s. Even Walmart may have a better selection than Macy%26#39;s. Dedicated craft places like Michael%26#39;s will do better than Macy%26#39;s but not as well as Beverley%26#39;s.
There is, or used to be, a fancy fabric store near Union Square. I think it might have been on O%26#39;Farrell....Bright%26#39;s? Does anyone know Sometimes these stores also carry knitting supplies.

Britex Fabrics, 146 Geary Street. %26lt;www.britexfabrics.com%26gt;
To my knowledge they only sell fabrics, as well as buttons and similar accoutrements for sewing, but I could be wrong. Their fabric selection is quite extensive.
OK...it is Britex Fabrics.
146 Geary Street ,between Stockton ahd Grant.
I just spoke with them, and they sell wool knitting yard on the first floor.
If you are staying in the Union Square area, this would save you some bus rides.
Good luck finding what you want at a reasonable price.
(no, they do not sell knitting ';yard';, but knitting ';yarn';. Having a hard time getting used to the keyboard of my new laptop....sheesh.)
Hello again,
Everyone - thank you very much for your help and effort, you are very kind! I think I%26#39;m going to visit Greenwich Yarn and Britex Fabrics (I stay at Palace Hotel).
Frisco_roadrunner: Many shops here in Helsinki have a decent selection of yarns, but all seems to carry just one brand (Novita www.novita.fi) and the same colours. I have been knitting so many socks from the same yarns that my friends and family are getting bored.. It will be nice to have a pair of socks that reminds me of my trip.
So, once again, thank you very much =)
Oh, and I forgot:
I looked this www.imagiknit.com and it looked very nice. So many different colours (burnt orange, chocolate, multi olive..)!! Here we have only brown, white, red, grey.. or maybe Novita just don%26#39;t have very good imagination what comes naming the yarns. =)
