Will be in LA in three weeks, questions

I will be in LA the second week of February. MY SO has family there in Redondo Beach and East LA and we will be staying with them some, but we would like to stay in a hotel a couple of nights too.

Any suggestion? We would like to be around night life pubs, but we are not into fancy clubbing. We do like to people watch.

Also, is there anything going on that week, like events or trade shows? Just wondering.

The nightlife is clustered into 2 major areas:

1. The Sunset Strip (in the city of West Hollywood)

2. In Hollywood -- a neighborhood within the city of L.A.

Not surprisingly, west Hollywood is just west of Hollywood.

Here is a REALLY BIG NEIGHBORHOOD MAP of L.A. but it will help you to orient yourselves. See below for instructions on how to read this map:

http://www.laalmanac.com/LA/lamap2.htm

INSTRUCTIONS...

Ok, don%26#39;t be scared when this map opens. Scroll down the map until you see the (blue) Pacific Ocean appear in the lower right. Keep scrolling down until the giant CITY OF LOS ANGELES %26amp; COMMUNITIES is visible. Position this title half-way up the screen (at the 9 o%26#39;clock position).

1. Redondo Beach is in the gray area in the lower right corner of the window (to the west of TORRANCE). Redondo Beach is not shown on the map.

2. LAX will be in the middle of the screen, just to the right of the giant CITY OF LOS ANGELES.

Now move the CITY OF LOS ANGELES downward to it just touches the lower left edge of the window.

1. The major tourist attractions start in the center of the window at Santa Monica. This is a popular beach city. You can also explore the beach areas north and south of Santa Monica.

2. Going inland from Santa Monica, following the gray line marked with a ';2';. This is Santa Monica Bl which passes through most communities of interest to tourists. The last community it enters before its apparent demise is a green area marked HOLLYWOOD. Just before it enters HOLLYWOOD is a slender strip of gray area marked WEST HOLLYWOOD (you may need a magnifying glass). That is the Sunset Strip area. Either of these two areas are very central to L.A.

3. Continuing from the point that the ';2'; ends, follow the red diagonal line in a southeast direction (you may need to move the map to see it). This line is the Hollywood Freeway (route 101).

4. The freeway ends in downtown L.A. which is makred as ';CENTRAL CITY'; and is in pink.

5. To the east of Central City in the gray area is east Los Angeles.

Here are hotels in Hollywood -- try to pick hotels in the 90028 zip code as they are closer to the center of Hollywood.
