Is a car necessary in San Diego, and if not, what area??

Is a car necessary in San Diego?? If not, what area offers the most in public transportation in and around the city??

If you stay downtown/gaslamp,Little Italy , Oldtown and part of Missionvalley you will be near lightrailtrolley(electric train) which is faster than busses.

See:www.sdcommute.com for pub transportation info.

A car is an advantage, but if it is not possible, downtown would be the most convenient location. From the low cost airport bus, to the Coronado Ferry, and other downtown attractions, downtown (including Gas Lamp and Little Italy (but not Old Town) would be best.

Old Town would be a second choice for someone without a car. Both Old Town and downtown have trolley stations and bus connections.
