Vacation Rental In San Diego

My wife and I are a retired couple approaching 60 years old and plan to escape the worst of the UK winter in Feb/March 2008 by spending 1 week in Palm Springs followed by 4 weeks in San Diego. We are an active couple who like to explore, walk and bargain hunt. Indeed to keep fit we like to walk for an hour every day .

We would like a vacation rental in a fairly quiet upmarket neighbourhood with relatively easy access to walking trails/coast paths/boardwalks. Our research indicates that La Jolla seems to be a good choice. Do you agree?

We would like to rent a reasonably spacious property if we are staying for 4 weeks. If La Jolla seems right for us is www.vrbo.com/53242 in a good location? It is a little larger than we need and more expensive than we anticipated!

Advice please.

Vacation Rental In San Diego

I love the property taht you selected. My concern, it seems to be well up on the slopes of Mt. Soledad. Some of the streets are quite steep and narrow. May (or may not) be the best location for walking. And again, depending on where you are, you may be right above the village or you could be slight north more towards Torrey Pines.

I think Del Mar is an attractive solution, look at 113972 or 122484. Also Solana Beach could be interesting, 50158 looks interesting.

I think Del Mar or Solana Beach would provide good walking experience.

Also you may want to consider downtown, although I would avoid the Gaslamp. Cortez Hill, Midtown and Hillcrest would be good options.

Also consider Coronado. Very good walking and very safe.

I hope this works out very well for you.

Vacation Rental In San Diego

Welcome to Trip Advisor Alan. It appears that I am a ';fellow 48er';. I agree that the property in La Jolla looks amazing! I have done a lot of walking on Mt Soledad. There are some steep parts but some areas near the top are not hard at all . I would assume you will have a rental car and so could easily drive down the mountain to walk at La Jolla Cove,La JollaShores , on the paths that go through MissonBayPark etc.

We have many lovely areas to walk in the city and you can explore all of them. My only concern about the hilltop location is that to get anywhere in town you have to drive down the hill- shopping, restaurants etc. Obviously ,many people of means live in the area and that doesn%26#39;t sem to bother them.

Thanks for very prompt response. I think the hill top would be a problem because it removes the option of walking to the shops starbucks etc!

Will take another look at vrbo for alternatives including Del Mar. Not sure about other areas suggested as being a complete stranger to the area makes it difficult to assess whether they would fit the ';quiet upmarket'; criteria

May have more questions.

Thanks.

You know we%26#39;re happy to help but if you rent someting really smart you have to host a small intimate quiet tripadvisor forum meeting.

But even if you don%26#39;t, we%26#39;re still here to help. You don%26#39;t know how much we all love San Diego.

Please feel free to ask more questions and to post the address of any home you are considering. Other possible areas for you to consider are :

Coronado -This i s a city located direclty across the bay from downtown SanDiego. It is reached by a short bridge or a passenger ferry.

It has a small town feel with a main street(Orange Avenue) and is the location of the famous HotelDelCoronado which is a victorian seaside resort. The streets are very flat and easy for walking with lots of local restuarants etc. yet within close reach of downtownSD.

Rancho Santa Fe-This area is one of the wealthiest in the whole county of SD BUT it is not on the ocean. It is a little inland from Del Mar.It also has a quaint ';central village area'; with restaurants stores etc.yOU will have many local roads on which to walk. The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe is a lovely hotel located in the town.

I mentioned the hotels in each of these areas because they will give you an indication of the atmosphere in th etown.

I think that you would really enjoy either the areas of Solana Beach and Del Mar, as suggested by Tootallsd or the lovely area of Coronado as suggested by Riffsmom. Solana Beach has a train station, so you can take the Coaster (commuter train) or the Amtrak and be right in downtown San Diego in a half hour - and Solana Beach is a really nice smaller ocean-front community with a nice beach area, and a Sunday farmers market, as well as many upscale shops and restaurants.

Coronado is one of my favorite areas for many reasons, but particularly, as Riffsmom noted, it is a very calm, quiet, laid back community, very flat, with many great areas to walk and explore, and just a ferry ride away from downtown San Diego and all there is to do and see there. Coronado also has the nicest beach of all of our San Diego beaches, in my opinion.

Thanks to you all for your help. Coronado looks a good bet. Have looked at www.vrbo.com again and wondered what you thought of following properties for location/suitability:

124036 on Glorietta Blvd

124436 near Country Club

98731 near 3rd st %26amp; H ave

82732 %26amp; 117195 in Tunapuna Lane, Coronado Cays (although this does not appear to be in Coronado proper)

and www.vacationrentals.com property 16917 ';Paradise Executive Home';

Would really appreciate your views.

PS did take a look at Del Mar and Solana Beach and was impressed with the properties but Coronado looks more convenient to downtown sights.

WOW! You have found some really nice possiblities. It is certainly hard to choose. I will give you my thoughts but we have a TA forum member called nadocat who lives in Coronado. Perhaps you could private message or post this in the Coronado forum specifically so nadocat would be sure to see it and respond.

Lets%26#39; take the cays possiblities first. We have stayed at the Loews hotel which is right next to Coronado Cays. As you said this is on the thin end of the peninsula NOT in the main part of the city.It is an area that was kind of built to be like Venice with lots of little ';canals'; and many people there own boats. It is on the SDBay and across the road from the ocean at Silver Strand State Beach. It is about an 8min drive into the city of Coronado. You%26#39;d be able to walk along the beach but the road is a big one and if it were me I think I%26#39;d prefer to be more in the town.

Choosing between your other possiblities is more problematic for me.

I dont think 3rd an dH is a good one as 3rd is a direct route to the bridge and is on the way to the naval base.

I like the Glorietta Blvd location but am always wary of being across from a golf course (flying balls etc.) I have never driven on Alameda and am not sure where the ';country club'; section is located. If it is near Country Club Lane and truly ';3blocks from the Del%26#39; then it sounds OK. please check with nadocat for first hand knowledge.
