I will be traveling to SF in February, and have recently found out that our trip will be coinciding with the Chinese New Year (Sun. 2/18). Unfortunately, we won%26#39;t be in town for the ending parade but wanted to know if interesting events we should keep an eye out for. Also, will Chinatown be open for business on the New Year day or is it tradition to shut down all businesses for the holiday. Any input would be greatly appreciated :)!
Chinese New YearJust to make sure you%26#39;re aware, although the Lunar New Year is February 18th in 2007, the parade will actually be held on Saturday, March 3rd. You can get a rundown on the events held leading up to the parade at %26lt;http://www.chineseparade.com/parade/schedule/schedule.asp%26gt;.
Chinese New YearChinatown will be open, just more crowded! Chinese New Year is a great time for fun in the city, with lots of events happening all over the city. I would pick up a Bay Gaurdian or a SF Weekly when I get into town and see what the latest events are!
I%26#39;m sure you could check their websites before hand if you wanted to plan things out....
Traditionally business are supposed to close on Chinese New Year day but in recent years, more business (restaurants in particular) remain open.
There%26#39;s a New Year Flower Fair 2/10 %26amp; 2/11. Carnival 2/15 thru 3/4. There%26#39;s also a street festival with vendor booths, performance stages on 3/3 %26amp; 3/4.

Thanks so much! We will be in fr. 2/17-2/20. I looked at some of the websites prior to posting, but just wanted to make sure I wasn%26#39;t missing out on any local/insider info. from people who are more familiar with the event. :).
