Have 1 day in SF

What are the things we should n%26#39;t miss. We have alot of energy and can fit alot into one day.

Have 1 day in SF

If I only had one day in San Francisco I would find a really good and comprehensive city tour. You can get advice on those from persons on this forum. Then you will have a comprehensive view of the city and know where to go and what to see when you come back and have time to do the city justice. With a morning tour you will have time in the afternoon to return to explore asights and reas which interested you most.

Powell/Hyde cable car ride (or Bay/Taylor) at night. The Buena Vista is fun for Irish Coffee at the end of the Hyde Street ride.

North Beach and Chinatown...get Dim Sum for lunch in Chinatown. Try to hit Chinatown in the early a.m. on Stockton St. to see all the activity of Chinese shopping, unloading produce, pork, etc. Grant Street is for tourists, but it%26#39;s still very much fun to shop there. I think SF has the best Chinatown I%26#39;ve ever been to.

Hang out a bit at City Lights Bookstore in North Beach on Van Ness. Walk up to Coit Tower for the view. Find the Filbert Steps on the backside of the tower, which go down, down to Montgomery St., and then off to the right you can pick them up again (Napier Lane) to view the oldest houses in the city, circa 1860s (they did not burn down during the 1906 earthquake/fire, stick-victorian, but notice the hydrants in abundance today). This area is a tropical paradise. You may see a flock of cherry-headed conyer parrots flying about (per the documentary Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill).

A good local place for a beer/wine and pool table is Gino and Carlo on Green St. People of all income levels go there. It used to be a speak-easy during prohibition. There was a door alleyside where the cue rack now hangs.

Down the street on Union is Gelato, excellent Italian ice cream. Mario%26#39;s Cigar Store at Union and Columbus makes cheap and excellent cappucino. Have fun!

That%26#39;s a question only you can answer because only you know the urgency of your interests. Here%26#39;s help:

The ';Don%26#39;t-miss SIGHTS in San Francisco'; page geocities.com/iconoc/Articles/Sights.html has enough to keep you busy for nine 12.7-hour days. It includes links to your best sources of advice on WHERE TO EAT and, according to the Department of Health, WHERE TO NOT EAT here, the UseNet Group ba.food, and the quite-good sfSurvey and the comprehensive Yelp. It also has a WEATHER CHART with a link to current conditions.

The FLAG/MAPS page geocities.com/iconoc/Grafix/FlagMaps.html has links to the best on-line MAP of San Francisco, an inter-active PDF created for the San Francisco Municipal Railway best viewed at 150% or greater magnification. There%26#39;s also a link that will tell you HOW TO GET THERE FROM HERE. Among other maps and links on the page is an outstanding WALKER/BICYCLIST map that shows the steepness of our streets, a map of our CABLE CAR ROUTES, our 49-mile SCENIC DRIVE, and a superb map of GOLDEN GATE PARK.

The frequently-updated SPECIAL EVENTS page has irregularly-scheduled music and dances as well as links to seven calendars of regularly-scheduled dances, a composite of five of them, and one of dance cruises and events around the world: http://geocities.com/dancefest/Specials.html

I still stick with my idea of a city tour. You can run around to different venues and never get a sense of the city in one day. After your half day tour, you can use your energy to run around and fit a lot into the rest of the day.....except that it will be more meaningful. Then....come back, y%26#39;hear?

Haha - thank you for all your great suggestions. I have to figure this out - How long do you think Alcatraz tour - would be. I would love to include that. And I am thinking of staying in the wharf area - do you think that is a good idea - and any hotel/motel suggestions - not too expensive. Thanks.
