Passport for Mexico

Do you need a passport if you are traveling by car from CA to Mexico? We have been receiving conflicting answers. Some say we don%26#39;t need the passport unless we are traveling via cruise, etc.

You dont need a passport YET at land crossings to go into Baja,Mexico BUT you do need special car insurance and if you rcar is a rental NOT all companies allow the cars to cross the border.

right now, passports are needed only for air travel. 2008 is the target date when everyone will need a passport to re-enter at both borders.

Just to add -passports are now needed for air AND cruise travel.

passports are not needed for cruises departing from and returning to any port in the US.

any cruise departing from from a port outside the US and requires air travel out side the US requires a passport.

again, this all is slated to change in 2008.

Pointloman I am not trying to argue BUT we went to Alaska last summer from Seattle and NEEDED passports because a stop was made in Victoria,British Columbia-Canada and we also needed one on our cruise from SanDeigo to Mexico. I think you don%26#39;t need one if the cruise is ONLY in USA waters like Hawaii cruises.

Thanks for all your info. You save me time and money! I was prepared to apply for 3 passports thinking I had to have them.! :)
