Hello-

I haven%26#39;t stayed there myself, but have passed it on many a trip into the park. For a 4 day stay, Midpines is a bit of a commute in my book- al least 1/2 hour before you actually reach the park, then more time to get to your ultimate destination. However, it does offer reasonable rates. If you can%26#39;t afford to stay in the valley itself, or closer in at El Portal, it may suit your purposes.

BTW, you are visiting at a wonderful time to enjoy the waterfalls and the rushing Merced River!

Yosemite Bug is rustic, but popular due to cost. I personally would rather stay outside the Park and away from the crowds and the Bug would be a good choice if cost were a concern. Although, the Bug is not exactly away from the crowds since it is popular. I would not worry about the half hour drive to the Park from the Bug, as the drive is beautiful. But I agree with macjack, you should probably check out accommodations in El Portal, like Yosemite View. It is a basic motel, but is close to the Arch Rock entrance.

Enjoy your visit鈥?

Your timing of the visit should be excellent. The hostel has been upgraded recently although I haven%26#39;t been there to check it out. It is in a convenient location on Hwy 140 but back off the road a bit so that you are in the woods and it is a nice location. The food is good too. Locals go there often for dinner. It is more than 30 minute drive into Yosemite Valley. It will take you about 25 minutes to drive to El Portal and then another 30-40 to get to the Yosemite Valley floor.

Sorry, I have to disagree with the last post. The drive from the Bug to the Arch Rock entrance is about a 30 minute drive. It is then about 6 miles to Yosemite Valley and the Valley is about 5 miles long. It does not take 30 to 40 minutes driving from the Arch Rock entrance to the Valley floor.

PS...If you want to know the distances from the various entrances to Yosemite Valley you might visit www.yosemite.com and click on lodging. All 4 entrances are noted with their distances to the various attractions inside the Park.

Thanks everyone ..for the advice, just to let you know, I hope I have not made a mistake but I cancelled our reservation at the Bug and booked a housekeeping unit in Yosemite. We are pretty rugged campers so I am not too worried about the accomodations AND we really wanted to immerse ourselves in the park since we have such limited time to spend. hope this was a good decision. I just don%26#39;t think Yosemite could be bad no matter what!!! Except maybe mosquitoes...will they be really bad the end of May ????Thanks, Sandra

Good for you - you got lucky! And yes, there will likely be mosquitos in May.

Enjoy!
