Driving to LA

I will be driving to LA on a Friday evening, coming from San Diego and heading for the Omni Downtown.

The last time I did this, I did a straight shot up the 5 and spent a long time on the last 10 to 15 miles going car length by car length toward downtown.

Can anyone recommend that I go another route, such as the 405 to the 110 instead? I will leave downtown San Diego at about 2:30 pm. I will have a passenger, so we can use the carpool lane whichever way we go.

Thanks for helping.

Either route will have you in bumper to bumper at that time. You%26#39;re hitting LA at 6PM, probably the worst traffic time possible. I suggest leaving earlier, or later.

Unfortunately, rush hour starts at 2 on Friday so I don%26#39;t see any way that you can avoid it -- short of taking the Amtrak.

Thanks to this advice, I will leave at 7 in the morning instead. It will still be on a Friday, but hopefully the drive will go better. Thank you!

Then you%26#39;ll just hit morning rush hour in San Diego, Orange County AND Los Angeles.

7 a.m won%26#39;t be much better, but you are right that the 405 to the 110 has carpool lanes for 2 or more, and this will generally be a great benefit. You still may have some jams in the carpool lanes, but that is the route you should take.

If you want to avoid traffic, leave between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.
